We started the day with discussing the Jamie Oliver lecture we watched yesterday in health. It was a heated discussion with lots of students sharing what stood out for them after watching the lecture and some of the solutions Jamie Oliver suggested to start to fix the obesity problem in the developed world. We created a list and lots of students shared a lot of their prior knowledge about the subjects of fast food, preservatives, proper labeling practices, McDonalds and government regulations. Seeing as there was a lot to be said the students have a P.O.V. (opinion piece) writing assignment on the lecture including 3 arguments and a viable solution. I have posted the notes from the discussion below so that if the students need to they can use them for reference. The format is a familiar one, as it is exactly the same as the "Student of the Month" piece of writing that the students have been writing since September. The due date is next Friday January 20th. (We didn't have time to take up the Science as the discussion was going so amazingly I didn't want to stop the momentum...great job everyone!)
After recess (the dreaded indoor recess!) the students were given the opportunity to review two information packages about bar graphs and histographs. The students did a Venn diagram and compared and contrasted the the two types of graphs. Then we took it up as a class. Please see the note below. Next we took the primary data that we collected on Monday and made a histogram as a class. Students were able to ask questions and help to organize the information. Homework tonight was p.295 #1+2 & p.296 #3-8, it is due tomorrow morning. We will be doing a histograph with primary data that we either collected in the class or will collect in the class. Students will work with a partner and then make their own histograph in class tomorrow to be handed in...date TBA.
Students handed in their French projects today...if you still haven't handed it in get it in to Monsieur or he will be calling home!
For History the students evaluated their group members and themselves now that the BIG POSTER/RESEARCH project is finally done. Marks will be collected, tallied and added as an Oral Communication mark AND a HISTORY mark.
We spent the last two periods working on the art project due either this Friday or Monday(student's choice). Just a reminder that the writing piece needs to be handed in as well as the art piece no matter what day you hand in the work!
Have a great night, and see you tomorrow. IT'S FRIDAY THE 13TH TOMORROW!!
