Tuesday...sorry no post yesterday!

Today we started the morning with some math work on the relationship of pi to the diameter and circumference of a circle. Notes were taken and we have a poster in the class to help us to remember the relationship. We watched 2 short videos and I will post them below. Students were given a piece of string and a ruler and they investigated the relationship between diameter and circumferences of circles. Homework for math is p. 14&15 #3-13, 15 & 16 ** It will be checked tomorrow for a mark for measurement so make sure you have it done.

After math we took up the Science investigation we did last week, discussed how we would go about answering the questions, and took notes. The notes will be posted below and may be used for your reference. If you have any questions or concerns I am here to help you. Soft due date for Science is this Friday February 3rd, 2011, hard due date is this Monday February 6th, 2011.

The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to getting the Coordinate Plane unit test done. Some people just have to do a few finishing touches but it went really well otherwise.

Infographic update. Some of tomorrow's computer lab time will be given for getting your research done for your infographic health project. We extended the due date from this Wednesday, to this Friday. Please use your time wisely. We also bumped a bit of Science time on Day 4(this Thursday) so that students could use this time to prep their pictures.

For tomorrow:
Math p. 14&15 #3-13, 15 & 16
English---LAST DAY TO HAND IN FAMILY STORY, HEALTH WRITE-UP OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU OWE ME!!!!

Guidance Day and The Day before BEACH DAY!!

Today started off with a "BANG" because Ms. Sneyd from guidance came in with our new and updated Choices magazines. She handed out the course selection sheets and walked us through the magazine. I made some notes about the information for students and their parents here they are:

Course Selection sheet:
  • is due back to school by February 10th, 2012
  • if you have applied to a specialized program then you can wait until a later date, however the lateset that the sheet can be handed in is February 15th, 2012
  • you are only responsible for one, and if you have applied to another school (Wexford, R.H. King, Marc Garneau) they will send you their course selection sheet and your teacher will have to sign it before bringing it back in.
  • if you have applied to a Catholic school you deal with them directly and follow their instructions
  • make sure SECTION A is filled in correctly with specific details as to who the primary contact is (mother, father etc.)
  • fill in the back course selection sheet, this is where you decide either to do Applied or Academic (I am available to help if you need it.)

Choices magazine:
  • p.8 has the My Blueprint education planner where you can find links to help you plan out your whole highschool career. Link http://www.myblueprint.ca/tdsb Select our school and set up a personal profile, it will help you to make decisions on career paths and the courses in highschool that will help you get there.
  • p.9 has Career Cruising information. It helps students figure out what things they like doing and what careers match those needs. You can link here: http://www10.careercrusing.com/ From home you need to add the following information to use this program Username: Toronto Password: 38870
  • p.16 lists the Alternative schools in our area. The profiles are there for you to browse and if regular highschool is too much for you these schools can make it work. Their programs are different and their class sizes are smaller so this might work for you if grade 9 & 10 are a struggle for you.
  • p.19 highlights Summer school info as well as information about course re-do or fast-tracking options.
  • p.20 gives you an idea about e-learning classes that you can do from home. You must go through guidance to enroll and it usually starts in grade 10 so this might be an option for those of you who work well independently.
  • p.24 talks about the Specialist High Skills Majors that different highschools offer, SATEC is on there so you may want to look into doing one of these courses.
  • p.26 Co-op information is there, for those of you looking for hands on experiences. This would start in grade 11 or 12 and is an amazing learning opportunity.
  • p.27 OYAP - which is an apprentice program that can begin in highschool which leads to better careers because they allow you to start your apprenticeship at an early age and you can bank your hours as time at school and credits earned. Their link: http://www.oyaptdsb.com/
  • p.33 is the Southeast Secondary school locations as well as phone numbers for those schools. Ms. Sneyd recommends that if you have a question about a school's program to call the school and ask to speak to their guidance counsellors. They will be a wealth of knowledge about their school and can answer questions in more detail if you have them.
  • p.34 highlights the courses you have to take in order to graduate, read it, get to know it and track your progress
  • p.36 has the course selection descriptions for applied and academic. Those pages will help you to get through it all and help you to make your decisions.
  • p.38 course code descriptions, shows you how to read the codes that the schools use and this will help those of you not going to your home school.
  • p.104 course codes start- the index will direct you to its description.
Ms. Sneyd's office #'s Mon&Tues- 416-396-6640, Thurs&Fri - 416-396-6310
You can call her anytime to let her know if you need some help making decisions as well as I am here for you. :)

Wow! That was a lot of information!!

After that the students had drama/dance, and after lunch we revisited some of the math teams but no one had time to present. We will do these tomorrow. Math homework is to practice on last night's math links (see previous blog post) and if you want you can post your scores to brag about your % right and your time!

French went well today, the students had a supply teacher and she was impressed with their willingness to stay on task and complete their work. I was happy too! : )

The end of the day we looked at the properties of BUOYANCY by building structures out of modelling clay and using spring scales to record and calculate the mass of the clay out of water and in water. Students built structures, poured marbles in and tried to sink their structures. It was awesome!! All scientists - Dennis, Aparajita, Tommy and Fatima were exceptional at leading their teams to victory and we all had a really fun time! Thanks to everyone for a nice finish to the day! Please enjoy the pictures attached and we will be using these images when it comes to the investigation write-up, due after Wednesday.

I am at a workshop tomorrow AM, it is BEACH DAY!! Don't forget to wear your beach wear (school appropriate) I want to win the yummy treat! ;) See tomorrow afternoon.

Tuesday

Today's tech period was spent researching either infographic health information OR finishing up science. Students were given the double period to work on their work so what they did in that time was up to them.

For English today we read from Speak. We got caught up in the story so we ended up spending time reading instead of working on our writing assignments. Homework tonight is to keep working on your rough drafts and editing will be done for you tomorrow if you have a finished piece of work to hand in for an edit.

For math the math teams were reunited once again for a transformation workshop. Students were asked to transform, rotate and reflect a shape of their choosing and then describe the steps they followed and write their translation vectors. Two groups presented today and students did well on this task. See pictures below. Homework tonight is to practice for the upcoming final test using the link below.
Scan down to the following title: http://ca.ixl.com/math/standards/ontario/grade-8
  • 8.4.4 Location and Movement
  • 8.4.4.1 graph the image of a point, or set of points, on the Cartesian coordinate plane after applying a transformation to the original point(s) (i.e., translation; reflection in the x-axis, the y-axis, or the angle bisector of the axes that passes through the first and third quadrants; rotation of 90°, 180°, or 270° about the origin)
For tomorrow:
Science lab due two days ago!! Density questions too!

Is it really raining?

I'm not sure if I should be complaining but usually at this time of year we are freezing at recess and at lunch and there is snow everywhere.  However today was different and the rain made everyone a little bit crazy including me!!

We began this morning by working on math skills.  Students worked in partners on identifying translations such as rotations and reflections on the coordinate plane.  They used formulas, protractors and compasses to check their work and draw out their solutions.  Students should be finished these work sheets and tomorrow will have one more day to practice their skill in their math teams.  We will have a test on Wednesday to check knowledge, understanding and communication.  Then we will move right into measurement and the area of a circle.

Today we also began the final step of our Fluids unit, buoyancy.  We will be doing an investigation on Wednesday with modelling clay, marbles, water, and a spring scale.  Pictures, results and analysis to follow this week.  Students should read through the experiment one more time before Wednesday and make sure that they are familiar with the steps.  If you haven't handed in the Density Science lab today it is due ASAP! Tomorrow Density questions are due (activity sheet from last week), the link for the Hindenburg is here: http://www.airships.net/hindenburg/disaster

For French M.Ndikumana assigned more worksheets dealing with the various vocabulary associated with Les Sports, please ensure to stay on top of your work as he will be getting his report card marks from some of the activities you are doing right now.

Tech period should be dedicated to researching your "JUNK" food infographic.  Below you will find a list of links that will help you with your research.

Snowy Thursday!

Today we began with language and students were given some time to work on their family story graphic organizers that were handed out today. Students worked in pairs and started brainstorming their ideas. They were also given a chance to tell their stories to a partner to get it out and start planning what details needed to be told and what details were not important to the story. Many students were on task and it was nice to see.

In Math we watched a video on rotations and then did a hands-on exploratory worksheet with a partner. Students were armed with a compass, protractor, ruler, scissors and some graph paper. In pairs students researched the relationship between rotating a shape clockwise and counterclockwise 90 degrees. I have attached some instructional videos for reference and students are encouraged to watch the videos for some review as well as to help them clarify their ideas. Coordinate puzzles were due today in class from yesterday and students should have already handed in their 2 scatterplot graph assingments and their histogram assignment by now.

After a blistery cold lunch hour filled with flurries and grade 8's wearing hoodies outside instead of coats we took up attendance and then jumped right into the Science from yesterday. Students were given 5 questions and a worksheet, they must research the Hindenburg and you will find the link below to help you get the answers that you need. This is due next Tuesday, so get it done!

(click on the links for pictures and the science behind it, there are some cool photos and I found this site really useful!)

To finish off a productive day, we covered a new health/art project concept. The assignment details will be handed out tomorrow as we planned it together but in a nutshell this is the project:
- students must create an informative cartoon image of junk food (hamburger, french fries, Filet-o-Fish)
- on that image they must include relevant and useful health information about the image (calorie count, positives or negatives of eating something like this on a daily basis, fat content, % of sodium, tablespoons of sugar etc.)
- students must have a minimum of 10 pieces of information on their infograph
- the two elements of design we are focusing on are: colour (their image must be appealing and colourful) and space ( the food item MUST be the focus of the poster).

Here are some examples below:

As promised here are some links to help you with your research portion of the project:
Here is a site that lists Canadian restaurant calorie counts, you just have to pick the restaurant from the data base: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-fast-food-chains-restaurants_c-Y2lkPTIx.html?bid=1333

Rainy Tuesday!

This morning began with a Tech period with Mr. Knierim where he led students through an activity on how to create a scatterplot graph using Excel.  The students used their data or the data of a neighbour and created a computer version of the graphs we have been drawing by hand.  Students printed their creations and handed them in for a Data Management mark.

After recess, we covered the topic of a family story.  I started this unit a while back and then we got busy with a few things and the project got dropped.  My intention was to revisit the project at a later time and I spent some time re-working the idea so that everyone would have a chance to share a story, experience, tradition or ritual that their family has experienced at one point in time.  We watched the clip below and I did the assignment myself and read my story to the class. In addition to this, we have shared family stories with each other as a discussion and my 89 year-old grandmother came in to share some of her life stories as well.  Over time we have talked about the various elements of this assignment and I look forward to the products that come out of this work. We still have to write up the details.  Coming tomorrow will be a graphic organizer, success criteria, learning goals and we will settle on the due date.  The first half of the assignment was handed out in class today though and students had a chance to start thinking about what is expected of them and what they might want to write about.

For French,  "Les Sports" were covered and the activities were completed in class.  Tonight there is no homework if the work was completed in class.  French party projects were handed back, and if you got your work in on the due date, Monsieur handed back the assignments marked already.

After recess we discussed the Cartesian homework from yesterday on coordinates and then jumped right in to translations.  I have to say that the class has been great, and students used class time to get their work done.  For your reference I have attached some of the instructional videos that we watched in class about translations with couple of links to help you if you get stuck.  Tomorrow we begin with Math and work will be checked from this evenings activity sheet, and the Math we have done since Monday.  Please come to class with all of your work done, as tomorrow we will move on to more difficult concepts and ideas.

The following links will help those of you who may be struggling as well:

We will start tomorrow with math, and will take up the homework from yesterday.  We will cover rotations and reflections in the coordinate plane and I will definitely have videos, worksheets and some activities for tomorrow.  There will most likely be a pop quiz on the coordinate plane this week (Thursday or Friday), and students will have to show what they know based on ordered pairs, translations and rotations.  Please make sure if you have any problems that you speak to me ASAP!

For tomorrow:
  • Scatterplot Geography Assignment is due tomorrow (no extensions, it's been over a week!)
  • Thursday History notes are due
  • Winter Activity day forms with $$ are due ASAP
  • Science labs are due Friday/Monday
  • Pizza Lunch $$ if you want to participate

Run between the raindrops, it's raining pretty hard out here in Whitby.  I've attached a cool clip here at the bottom if you haven't already seen it, I like the song and the concept is neat.  5 people playing one guitar. Enjoy and see you tomorrow!

Monday, second week back! Is it really only Monday?

Today started with a math check from last week and students were asked to hand in their histograms from last day. Some students forgot to hand in their Scatterplot graphs and so they were able to do this today and they will be returned tomorrow, with feedback to improve for Wednesday's assignment. We started Geometry today with 2 Khan Academy videos on the Cartesian coordinate plane. You will find them attached below, for reference. Students watched the films and then as a refresher did the activities in the text book Chapter 13 p.422 & 423 #1-10. After recess the students were given a Cartesian worksheet on plotting coordinates using all four quadrants. Both the worksheet and chapter are due tomorrow for a homework mark. We will also be taking up questions that students might have had problems with as #10 on the worksheet was a little unclear. Try it tonight, if you can answer it great, if not we'll go through it tomorrow. For tomorrow we will cover, translations using the Cartesian plane. Activity sheets will be sent home for practice and started in class in case students need extra help. So far the class seems fairly confident so that's great news!

After recess we took up the lab results for Science. We walked through the steps and expectations for the next Science lab and discussed how to answer each of the questions. We decided that the soft due date for the lab is Friday January 20th and the final date is Monday January 23rd. Please see below photos for the expectations. Students were given the option to take notes or read the blog later, please reread the expectations and ask me any questions if you need any help.

After recess we reviewed the upcoming due dates, they are fast approaching and we discussed the upcoming Winter Activity Day on February 10th. Forms and money are due ASAP if you need rentals for skates or skis. The final day for trip forms is next Friday, so plan to bring them in soon. Pizza money is due ASAP so if you're ordering it, get your money in! We also talked about the upcoming chocolate sales and the chocolates will be here the first week of February, just in time for Valentines Day! More details to come, I promise!

For language we were going to start a new writing assignment but after a class discussion we decided to keep it open as a double work period to catch up. Many students used this time to redo graphs, check their opinion piece, continue working on their history summary or finalize their notes for Science. Time is precious and this period flew by, before we knew it, the bell was ringing.

Productive day, lots done today! See you tomorrow 8's! ;)

Friday the 13th!

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! Today was a snowy surprise and a long drive for everyone coming in to school. The roads in Scarborough were a nightmare and I think everyone in the city had forgotten how to drive when it's snowy so it was a slow start this morning.

During language, students were given the opportunity to work on their Health writing assignments that are due next FRIDAY! We also talked about what was due the rest of the week next week and there is a lot of work coming up.

Today for math students were given the opportunity to create a histogram using data that they either collected in class OR data from the other day. Students were given 40 minutes to work on this graph and about 5 students finished their work and handed it in. The assignment is attached in a photo below, it is due Monday. The Scatterplot take-home assignment is due Wednesday so make sure you finish that this weekend as well.

For History the students were assigned to read chapter 3 and make jot notes about what they have read paying close attention to some of the major events that happened right before Confederation. This will be collected on Thursday this week, and marked for details and key points. This is not only a reading mark, but a History mark as well. I am available for extra help if students need it...and students will be given some more class time to do some reading in class, however it will not be a double period so get your homework done people! (See photo below for details).

Congratulations again go to Angela for being nominated our November Student of the Month. George your winning nomination paper was a great submission and I look forward to January's nomination papers. After our discussion about healthy eating we decided to celebrate the Student of the Month lunch at Subway rather than at McDonalds as a healthier choice. Mr. Church was flattered that he got to come along and was impressed with the switch.

The last of the French projects were handed in today for full marks with no phone calls, however I think some people missed the deadline, so parents expect some phone calls this weekend from Mr. Ndikumana if your son/daughter hasn't met the deadline. Students also got a new booklet with a series of activities based on vocabulary and verbs on sports. There are some mini projects, and a culminating task coming up soon so students stay up on your French work!! (parents you should ask to see these booklets too, they are pretty involved and students will be given a timeline to get things done.).

The last two periods of the day were spent in phys ed. with Mr. Church. I think the basketball unit has begun...lots of drills and lots of hard work.

For next week:
Monday- Students must have their science results ready to discuss and prepare for the lab report.
Histograph good copy that we did for 40 minutes today in class is due first thing Monday
AM
Students who did not complete p.295 #1&2 and p.296 #3-8 must show their work for a mark

Wednesday - Scatterplot assignment due

Thursday- History jot notes complete and ready to be handed in. This will help for an upcoming
debate and project so don't slack!

Friday - Health opinion paper due!

* Students also got a permission form for Winter Activity Day and were given the option to go Skating or Skiing. Forms and money are due before the 27th of January so get them in ASAP.

Stay warm and have a good weekend! ;)
Survivor buddies - Angela: Student of the Month & George: Winning nomination paper & flying to Cuba tonight!

The day before Friday!

We got a lot done today and everyone worked really well in the class, so it was a great day even if it did rain and we had one indoor recess!

We started the day with discussing the Jamie Oliver lecture we watched yesterday in health. It was a heated discussion with lots of students sharing what stood out for them after watching the lecture and some of the solutions Jamie Oliver suggested to start to fix the obesity problem in the developed world. We created a list and lots of students shared a lot of their prior knowledge about the subjects of fast food, preservatives, proper labeling practices, McDonalds and government regulations. Seeing as there was a lot to be said the students have a P.O.V. (opinion piece) writing assignment on the lecture including 3 arguments and a viable solution. I have posted the notes from the discussion below so that if the students need to they can use them for reference. The format is a familiar one, as it is exactly the same as the "Student of the Month" piece of writing that the students have been writing since September. The due date is next Friday January 20th. (We didn't have time to take up the Science as the discussion was going so amazingly I didn't want to stop the momentum...great job everyone!)

After recess (the dreaded indoor recess!) the students were given the opportunity to review two information packages about bar graphs and histographs. The students did a Venn diagram and compared and contrasted the the two types of graphs. Then we took it up as a class. Please see the note below. Next we took the primary data that we collected on Monday and made a histogram as a class. Students were able to ask questions and help to organize the information. Homework tonight was p.295 #1+2 & p.296 #3-8, it is due tomorrow morning. We will be doing a histograph with primary data that we either collected in the class or will collect in the class. Students will work with a partner and then make their own histograph in class tomorrow to be handed in...date TBA.

Students handed in their French projects today...if you still haven't handed it in get it in to Monsieur or he will be calling home!

For History the students evaluated their group members and themselves now that  the BIG POSTER/RESEARCH project is finally done. Marks will be collected, tallied and added as an Oral Communication mark AND a HISTORY mark.

We spent the last two periods working on the art project due either this Friday or Monday(student's choice). Just a reminder that the writing piece needs to be handed in as well as the art piece no matter what day you hand in the work!

Have a great night, and see you tomorrow. IT'S FRIDAY THE 13TH TOMORROW!!

Wacky Wednesday

Our third day back and the wheels are turning! We started the morning with revisiting the ideas surrounding scatter plot graphs and students were given the opportunity to finish collecting their data within the class. Teams of students picked 2 variables to measure and then collected that data from the class. Tonight's homework is to finish the graph that each group started in class and hand it in with all of the success criteria in mind. In addition to that the students were given a take home assignment to do a scatter graph using secondary data. We decided that the good copy of this assignment was due on Wednesday of next week (January 18th, 2012). Students are welcome to ask for extra help with this in class and I am willing to help them if they are unclear of the steps in the next week.

**Reminder for English: Student of the Month characteristics are: Cooperation, Intiative & Fairness due: January 30th, 2012!

For Health we watched a lecture by Jamie Oliver on Obesity in America and how the systems set in place are failing the future generation of children. I have attached the link below and I would like students to re-watch this lecture, as we will be taking it up in class tomorrow.

In Science we did a lab, exploring the ideas surrounding density. We explored the properties of: corn syrup, blue vinegar(dyed for observation purposes), canola oil, 18% cream and two solids a piece of cork and a small block. The students made some cool patterns in their cylinders and density was calculated in small research groups. The class did a great job, and we`ll unpack the ideas about the lab tomorrow during language. Special thanks to: Fatima, Kiri and Dennis for being the scientists in charge, the lab ran smoothly because of you, great work!

For tomorrow:
1. Students must have their Scatter plot graphs done to hand in.
2. French project is DUE!
3. We have a double period of art to work on the Speak - tree assignment. If students are finished their art because they did it on the holiday then they need to work on their written component.

See you all tomorrow!
Scatter plot graph Success Criteria
The final mixture...corn syrup on the bottom, vinegar in the middle, canola oil on the top, an orange block in the middle, the cork floating on the top and the white beads are the 18% cream!
