Journal Reflection

Hello to all of you! I hope you had a great long weekend.

It was great to meet all of your parents and see the amazing families behind all of you. I hope all of you who wrote the TOPS exam did well, and of course I was happy to write all of the letters of recommendation that I handed out. I know R.H.King will be looking for portfolios and SATEC will be asking for other things so you'll have to let me know what you need and I'll help you out as much as possible.

I am looking forward to getting into some integer work this week. Adding and subtracting using number lines and manipulatives.

You will also be working on your History research projects and the more formal project outline will be handed out with a rubric. I'm looking forward to posting a rather substantial Confederation Timeline at Clairlea.

For English you will be responsible for answering a journal reflection posting on our blog. Please make sure you sign your post with either your initials, name or a codename that you let me in on in class. I'd love to have a paperless option to talk about this novel. So here's your question:

Journal Reflection #2

Is there any characteristic about Melinda or Heather so far in the story that you feel that you can identify with? Pick two characteristics and explain how you can connect with both or one of these characters. Why do you think the author Laurie Halse Anderson chose to wrote them this way?

I'll see you tomorrow, looking forward to a great week!

  1. I think one characteristic I have which is similar to Heather is, I want to be part of many groups in school. Heather wants to be part of a a high school clique called the "Martha's". This year I wanted to be part of the Student Leadership Team. And me and Heather were successful in doing so. I also think me and Heather are similar because we talk about everything and we do not shut up. Through out the book Heather talks about everything there is to talk about. I think I also talk about everything (but not as much as Heather). I think the author made Heather the way she is because she is the exact opposite of Melinda. And since Melinda wanted to have someone that wasn't her friend but could hang out with, until she got her own friends. When Melinda would get her own friends it would be really easy to ditch Heather because they were nothing a like.

  2. I think one characteristic I have which is similar to Melinda is, I felt like an outsider every time I started a new school. I moved form Newmarket to Mississauga and then here in Scarborough and every time I went to a new school I always felt alone. Another thing I think me a Melinda have in common is, that we feel uncomfortable when people start talking about ours and their feelings. So we try to change the subject or stop the conversation then we get that uncomfortable silent and we leave with out saying anything.

  3. I think the author made Melinda this way because the one "friend" that Melinda would get is almost the exact opposite of her self. The author also made it so that Melinda doesn't have the courage to tell any one what actually happened at the end of summer party. Making Melinda feel alone when she gets to high school. 1, because all her friends left and 2, because she doesn't want to reach out and tell any one her secret.

  4. They made Heather like Melinda's past, like she said in the book, Melinda used to be a preppy, good girl that tried to get into everything.
Here is one thing i have that is similar with Melinda and Heather:
    1. Melinda: Im also a low back person that trys everything in their power to avoid getting into big things
    2. Heather: I also have every weird/funny parents that i love no matter what anyone says :).
To relate to anyone suffering through this type of problem cause there are people that have this problem, much like Melinda. While the author makes Heather to be the preppy friend that everyone has or wants. They are like like everyday kids that have their problem except Melinda problem is huge.
